I spent yesterday planning some school things, and I {hopefully} determined who would be reading what in January and February.
Elijah reads. A lot. Hundreds of pages each day. The only thing is that he loves to re-read and re-read the exact.same.books. Because I know there are worse things in life, I don't discourage his re-readings, but I do want to encourage him to try something new. Here is his list for Jan-Feb:
Elijah's Readers
Fifty Famous People by James Baldwin
The King of the Golden River by John Ruskin
Granny's Wonderful Chair by Frances Browne
Freckles by Gene-Stratton Porter
Five Little Pepper Books (all)
The Enchanted Castle by E. Nesbit
Charles Dickens' Children Stories
Heroes Every Child Should Know by H. W. Mabie
audio ~ finish Little House on the Prairie series
reader's choice ~ 10 additional books of his choice (that he has not previously read)
I would like for Elijah to vary and track his choices, so I made this graph for him to chart each book he reads. You can give it a click to download it.
I have to be intentional regarding read-alouds; I need a list of books in order to set goals and allow read-alouds to receive their well deserved attention. Here is my list for the next two months:
Books to Read to Simon
The Children's Book of Heroes by William J. Bennett
James Herriot's Treasury for Children finished 1-6-12
books that go-along with our units for January ~ February
Books to Read to Both Boys
Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter
The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling finished 1-17-12
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren finished 1-10-12
Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden

That’s a great Idea! I did make some goals this week. I even blogged about it!

Awesome inspiring lists! Thanks for the printout. I think I’ll use it!
We read the Pippi Longstocking series (4 books- can’t find the fifth!)this past autumn and my kids LOVED it. I also borrowed from our district library the “Children of Noisy Village” series (3 books) by Astrid Lindgren. We’re reading those right now and they BEG me to keep reading more… my poor voice box š
When you wrote last year you read 90 minutes a day to your kids I was in awe! You have really inspired me this past year to get serious and read books outloud to my kids. So thank you for doing that!

Hi Ami,
Just wondering how you come up with the lists(?) I find a lot of books in the children’s section have inappropriate stuff for kids in them. Do you pre-read? Skip over parts? Help!
Thanks! š

Cindy,
I think this would be a good blog post. I will try to have it up by next week! š I definitely want to answer this question, and it will probably take a few paragraphs. š

Hi Ami
I just wanted to write a little note to say how much I enjoy your blog. Your eldest son sounds very much like my son, Ezra, who devours books like there is no tomorrow. We are Aussies but live in Indonesia which makes getting books a little harder so we have recently also gone the Kindle route to try and keep up with providing books to read.
Anyway… thanks for the information about the reading challenge I will definitely implement that for this year as we are just about to begin our school year. Thanks again!
