You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be –
I had a mother who read to me.
~Strickland Gillilan
Today I bring you five sweet, simple tales from the 1950s. They aren’t a dime a dozen like so many of the tales you find on the market shelves today. These books are special.
Harry the Dirty Dog by Gene Zion
Both of my boys adore this book about Harry–the white dog with black spots that runs away because he doesn’t want to take a bath. By the time he makes his way back home, he’s a black dog with white spots! Will his family recognize him?
The Blueberry Pie Elf by Jane Thayer
No one can see an elf.
No one can hear an elf.
No one can feel an elf.
So, how in the world is this little guy going to let the people living in the house know that he wants some blueberry pie?
Down Down the Mountain by Ellis Credle
This is the tale of Hetty and Hank and how they got their first pairs of shoes. It involves turnips, selflessness, and a county fair. A great book for the entire family.
Miss Twiggley’s Tree by Dorothea Warren Fox
Miss Twiggley is a strange bird–she lives in a tree! She’s incredibly shy, and some of the people living in her town think she’s downright batty! However, when a hurricane hits the town, there’s only one place that’s safe from the rising water. Will Miss Twiggley be able to overcome her fears and save the day?
The Plant Sitter by Gene Zion
If you have a plant-curious child (or if you want one), try this story! It’s filled with the adventures of a plant-sitting boy. Sure to bring a smile or two!

I’ve been enjoying your blog. I found it through Candace at His Mercy is New. I love these book posts! I can’t wait to read some of these that I’ve never heard of before. I especially like this post on books written 50 years ago!

We love Harry and Miss Twiggley! The Plant Sitter is one I have been wanting for a long time, but I can’t ever find it a price I am willing pay. I’ll have to look into The Blueberry Pie Elf – never heard of that one. The FIAR book is on our shelf, but we have not read it yet.
Really loving your book posts š

We love Harry around here! It is our youngest’s favorite book. Not only do I love the stories in the older books, I love the illustrations! There is so much to enjoy on each page. Thank you for sharing!
