For the past few weeks we’ve been studying Michaelangelo as part of our artist study. We study one artist and his paintings for 6-9 weeks and usually complete one project to go with the study.
Michaelangelo painted on wet plaster, and Elijah painted on wet Plaster of Paris.
First, I found some containers to use as molds (round cake pans). I told Elijah what we were going to do, showed him the molds, and told him to draw a plan of what he wanted to paint on paper. He designed some kind of rainbowed pepperoni pizza (I’m sure Michaelangelo would be proud). š
Then we mixed up the plaster with water according to the directions on the package.
We let the plaster sit in the molds until it was starting to set. It is REALLY tricky to know when to pop it out, but you definitely want it to still be wet. For this reason, I recommend making more than you will need. Chances are, some will break. If they don’t break, your kids will probably be thrilled to paint extra (or you can paint one yourself!).
Elijah painted it according to his design (minus the pepperonis)
Stupendo!

Wonderful, hands-on learning!
You should add this to the Hands-on HS Carnival.
